Emigration to New Zealand - 002
& 003
The 1st vessel chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Co for the
conveyancing of emigrants to NZ was the Punjaub which
sailed from England
on 1 June 1873. During the 6mths of the year
no less than 31 vessels were dispatched with 10,000 souls and
40,000 tons of cargo. --------

Another of our old Canterbury pilgrims has passed away

John Charles Watts-Russell died yesterday morning ---
was
the youngest son of the 1st family
of Jesse Watts-Russell, Esq. of Ilam
Hall, Stafordshire, who is still living upwards of the
age 90 ---- married in Ireland in 1850 came here
aged
about 25 on the
Sir George Seymour
arriving 17 December
1850, his land adjoined the Deans and founded another
Ilam.------
he became a run-holder in 1851 or 1852
in the Malvern Hills ---
towards the end of 1855 he returned to England with his
wife--- came back in the Westminster
at the end of 1858 --
left
again for England in 1866 and again returned in 1871

when she married the 2nd time she thought

absent for 7 years

90 Peninsula district including Akaroa and Bays 280.
