a boy named Whitford  had a narrow escape from being drowned yesterday afternoon.   ------   more  -------  great credit to
                        Captain Jenkins  for rescuing the lad  and also to Constable Eares.

Mr Frederick Wilson  was thrown from his horse on Saturday afternoon  in Cashel street,  ---  sustained severe injuries  -----

Joseph Davidson Wilson,  an infant  10 weeks old,    ----- a girl named Elizabeth Talbot  aged about 8 years  was                            
                        in bed at the house of Mrs Mary Benn,  a candle overturned  catching the bedding alight. -------

BRIEN  - 
A deputation  from the employees of Messrs Ward & Co.  brewers,  waited on Mr W.H.Brien ----   presented him with a hamdsome
                    gold locket on the occasion of his retirement from the service of the firm.

a verdict of arson against some person or persons unknown.  ---sympathy is felt throughout the Peninsula for the loss  Messrs Webb & Co.have sustained
         by the destruction of their fine steam saw mill  ------   uninsured ----

McCANN  - James   found dead in his chair --- at Mr C.W.Shand's  on Saturday morning ---   died of natural causes ----

---  at Kaiapoi on Sunday--  to a lad about 5 years old,  a son of Mr James Highland.  ---- a number of children were playing in a paddock in Sneyd street,  
                with a horse,  swinging on its tail, ---- kicked out  --- struck the lad on the forehead ----

A French ormolu clock,  of unique design  with minature mercurial pendulum,  purchased by the City Council for presentation to Mr Cuff,  the late City Surveyor,
 may be seen at Messrs Coates and Co's  shop,  Colombo street.  ----  to Cornelius Cuff in recognition of his services as city surveyor  during the last 7 years -----

D. Jannette was charged with ---  deserting his 5 children.  Thurza Newman  said he left the children in her charge ----   accused about to be married again --- 
went up country 3 weeks ago to work  -----  injured arm ---  unable to work ----  lots more  ------

BANKS  -
The body of the lad Banks  ------  was recovered this morning  in Dampier's Bay.  an inquest was to be held this afternoon at the Canterbury Hotel.
