Mr Francis Jollie,  of Mount Peel,  died yesterday. ---   Mr Jollie was one of the leading pioneers of settlement on New Zealand,  having 1st  resided in the
Nelson province.  He was one time Nelson Agent for the New Zealand Company  -------   for many years a member of the General Assembly ------    farm 
at  Wakapuwaku  ---   was also  the  first cultivator of the hop in New Zealand   ------

an inquest was held at the South Rakaia Hotel  on 29 November ----  death  of George Sharp --- evidence of James Heslop,  his partner  and William
Compton ---  attempting to ford a river on horseback ------  the conduct of William Compton   ---  deserves the highest  praise -------

---  Mr Todd,  who has been murdered in the Waikato  is a younger brother of Mr George Todd,  of Opawa,  Christchurch.

Yesterday members of the City Council  and their Clerk  proceeded by special coach to the residence of his Worship the Mayor on the Ferry Road,
for the purpose of presenting the testimonials to Mrs Duncan -----    child whose birth the testimonial was intended to commemorate --- handed the
epergne  to Mrs Duncan -----  lots  more -----

Accident  -  HERRICK  -  018
---  near Tai-Tapu --  Mrs J.J.Herrick  was driving out  with her 4 children,  the horse shied  at a quantity of timber  lying on the road --- with great presence
of mind   threw out 2 of her children, one a baby   and herself sprung to the head of the horse  which she contrived to hold till neighbours came to her
assistance  ------  had the horse gone 2 feet   more to one side   ------- might have all been killed.

-- at Kaiapoi  yesterday  ---  loss of a little girl about 4 years old,  daughter of Mr H. Lavery,  residing at Eyreton -----  was found  about a quarter mile
