CARGILL - The First Superintendant of Otago - 021, 022 & 023
Died Monday 6 August --- Captain William Cargill was a
descendant
of Donald Cargill, the Cameronian minister --suffered
persecution
in the reign of Charles 11 Captain Cargill was born in Edinburgh on
28
August 1874 -- in 1802 he joined the army ---
severely wounded at the battle of Busaco ----
retired
from Army in 1821 --- he left in the John Wickliff
in
December 1847 landed in Otago 23 March 1848 -----
elected 1st superintendant of the Province in 6 September 1853
---- he married Mary Ann Yates, in 1813 the only
daughter of Lieutenant Yates of the Royal Navy who survives him, he
leaves 5 sons, 3 daughters and 43 grandchildren
