In Memoriam -
We laid him in his grave, and stalwart men
Were not ashamed to mourn his loss in tears
He taught us year by year the sterling truth
That to ensure sound mental calibre
The body must be strong as well as brain.
And more than any mode of noble sport
He loved the art of rowing and would school
The novice in his unassuming way
And many oarsman in our midst affirms
That from his maxims his own style was learnt
Wherewith his laurel-leaves were justly earned
Good heart! farewell! we love thee better now
Better reposing in the light of God
Better to leave the weariness of life
Better to rest from temporary toil
And wait till those who love thee follow thee
His absence is not all a loss. He tells
The generation after him to strive,
To gird themselves unto the dire affray
Of life's most ardent battle where his men
Who, trained with head erect and dauntless gait,
Intend to win, let come what may, And those
Are they, who in coming years, will prove
That they themselves are born of Englishmen,
And Gordon Glassford's name will be revered.
